Not so long ago we were getting very excited about the fact that we could use our virtual reality headsets to step inside the worlds of our favourite Studio Ghibli films. Now weāre reaching for our headsets all over again with the launch of a Disney VR app.
Launched by Disney Interactive, the app is called Disney Movies VR (we wonder what imagineer was behind that out-there name) and itās available to download free on SteamĀ for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive headsets.
Some of the appās content seems to aim to do the same kind of thing as the Studio Ghibli experiences, bringing viewers into explorable scenes from some of their favourite films. Of course, there isnāt a scene from every Disney movie you love; for now theyāve included a small number of experiences featuring the worlds of some of their most recent blockbusters including The Jungle Book, Captain America: Civil War and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. No doubt thereās at least one title in that list that will draw your interest.
From taking a scroll through the Steam reviews, it appears not all content is made equal in Disneyās app. The general consensus is that the fully animated main menu is excellent and some of the rendered explorable Jungle Book scenes are well worth a look whereas 360 videos of red carpet premiers leave a lot to be desired. Still, free content is free content and this is a good sign that Disney Interactive could do a lot more cool stuff with the app in the future.
