If youāve ever been on the internet, youāve more than likely seen Sarah Jessica Parker - actress, executive producer, Broadway star - compared to a common horse. In fact, thereās a whole website for it: SarahJessicaParkerLooksLikeAHorse.com, in which pictures of her are posted alongside a horse the author thinks looks vaguely similar:
For most of us, this kind of relentless, public face-shaming would be incredibly hard to take. Weād feel sad, weād turn inwards, we wouldnāt want to be in the public eye. But SJP, to her credit, never seems to have given much of a shit - and now sheās gone one better.
Sheās signed up as the face of Jordache Jeans - whose logo is a horse.
Thereās no possible way this is an oversight. Sheās been hounded with the horse comparison for years, and if I know people, has probably been neighed at in the street more than once. So while people on Twitter are speculating that this is a giant error on her part and she must be unaware of it, we see it differently.
Sheās trolling us back.
As the mighty Tyrion Lannister points out in Game of Thrones (or A Song of Ice and Fire, if you prefer), sometimes taking peopleās insults and running with them is the most powerful thing you can do.
Iāve definitely found this to be true. When some trolling dickwad set up three puppet Twitter accounts just so he could call me “Queen of the Humblebrag,” I put it in my bio. I used it as my WiFi password. I took it, made it mine, and stripped it of its power.
SJP is doing the same thing. People will continue to call her a horse for as long as they think itāll hurt her. If they see her laughing, owning it, and carrying on regardless, whereās the fun? You canāt laugh at someone whoās laughing at themselves.
Thereās a good reason this is my favourite Ichabod the Optimistic Canine cartoon:
People are going to be sucky no matter what you do. Theyāre going to talk shit about you, theyāre going to call you names, theyāre going to be jealous and nasty and hateful and hurtful. You canāt stop that. But you can take it, turn it around, and make them feel powerless.
And if you can make a giant pile of sponsorship money while youāre at it? Even better. Rock on, SJP.
